I’ve become interested in Calton Hill’s proximity to Edinburgh’s “Rainbow Triangle” and its history as a spot for gay “cruising” (seeking sexual partner in a public space) and “cottaging” (engaging in sexual acts in a public toilet). Public toilets as political spaces. Tissues as potential evidence of cruising activity (read somewhere that it’s not as frequented a site anymore, since it became so known for it and thus higher risk of arrest).

I spotted and took a rubbing of the eye-in-the-triangle masonic symbol thinking it could be used in relation to the Rainbow Triangle. Reading further I understood it came from the Eye of Providence or “All-seeing eye”, which linked the symbol to the function of Calton Hill as an aerial viewpoint in Edinburgh, as well as its Scottish enlightenment history. Conspiracy is an interesting connotation but don’t know where I might draw that in? – New World Order, Illuminati, the 1%.

The “All-seeing eye” is thought to have come from the Egyptian Eye of Horus, which represented protection, royal power and good health, and was intended to provide protection to the Pharaoh in the afterlife.

I then went up to Calton Hill to draw some of the prominent landmarks with the All-seeing eye hovering/radiating above them.

The observatory looks back into the All-seeing eye of God.
