HUBCAP Instagram Residency // Megan Rudden

For the week beginning 16th November 2020, HUBCAP invited Megan Rudden to be our first Instagram Artist-in-Residence of the new academic year (and the first artist to work with the new committee for year 2020/21).

Megan led us through impressive examples of her practice from years in education to the present day. I particularly found her use of language and text inspiring; the personalised, self-descriptive poems framed within the online dictionary template. I think the anti-academicism is an important take-away (in terms of jargonistic/inaccessible language) – to embrace creative use of language to the point of excess – linguistic gluttony. Expression of hatred for certain artwork and artists is a worthwhile exercise – and again a questioning of established, academic opinion (do you yourself think the “greats” are great? or do you find them problematic?)

A very enjoyable Q&A, despite own discomfort being on camera. Covered a lot of ground and gained great insight into her process and concepts – loved hearing her reasons for hating Picasso, Hirst, Koons and Allen. Has made me want to incorporate writing and research into my practice, particularly as ways to undermine established ways of seeing and thinking in art and society.
