Major Project: Internet Art

Tom Corby and Gavin Baily

Cyclone, 2006

Cyclone re-maps and animates discussions taking place live in online forums dedicated to extreme viewpoints (e.g. climate change denial) to the pressure fronts of weather isobars, whose complex structures are used to visualize the conversational churn and eddy of argument.
…this work is as much, if not more about articulating and problematising entanglements between social and technological worlds

Maxima-Minima, 2015

materializing the entire data set used in The Northern Polar Studies as print-outs, the installation lays bare scientific data to public scrutiny and navigation. Maxima-Minima reminds us that data is always situated and embodied in contextual, discursive and material practices that exceed a technical base.

Very research based: Cyclone accessible, Maxima-Minima less accessible – “the installation lays bare scientific data to public scrutiny and navigation” – how is a layperson meant to understand the meaning of all that data?

Cyclone works a lot better – online climate change denial/arguments visualised as weather patterns
