ESW Tuesday

Today was a continuation of the development loop from Monday, sculpting clay instead of constructing paper and card. Weight, structure and space remained important elements to consider, while texture and means of shaping the material became additional aspects to consider.

I became quite focussed on the processes of building up (primarily by hitting with sticks) and cutting away again with wire – I liked how the curves defined the space around the sculpture and introduced an uncertainty to its structure, testing the point of collapse.

From my developmental drawings I kept trying to work spaces into/out of the clay and communicate some of the surface textures of the clay. Ultimately however I found it difficult to get my head around the idea of continuing impressions of previous sculptures through drawing and vice versa.

In terms of successful sculpture I am not sure I formed one that could be considered interesting from 360 degrees.
