Any process
Began with clay, proceeded with development loop process from the first day.
Hit clay with sticks to build it up and cut away with wire, which meant that the sculpture became about weight and balance – what was the most I could cut away without it collapsing? After sketching again my attention was drawn to the space defined by the curves of the clay.
My decision to incorporate chicken wire as a structural feature resulted in less interesting work, as it became less about the quality of clay as material and more about qualities of the chicken wire – which wasn’t too supportive anyway.
Continuing to a resolved piece I applied modroc to the curves and caverns of the wire and clay sculpture intending to create a new one with the dried mod roc. Once dried, I placed them together to form a self-supporting, encasement of the space left absent by the removal of the clay sculpture.
The final piece offered interesting shapes, forms, delineated space from each angle and contained in it my previous preoccupations with weight, support, curves and crevices.
